Long-time volunteers honored

Two long-time volunteers were honored at the United Way annual meeting with the President's Choice Spirit of United Way award. Outgoing Board President Dr. Joe Paul selected Sharon Weathersby and Laura Smith as the award winners for their many years of service to United Way. This dynamic duo has each served on the United Way board of directors and on the communications committee for years. They have each chaired the committee as well. We thank Sharon and Laura for their dedication. The honor is well-deserved.
Other awards presented at the annual meeting included the Top Ten Campaigns. These organizations were: Forrest General Hospital, Hattiesburg Clinic, the University of Southern Mississippi, Leaf River Cellulose, Wesley Medical Center, Hattiesburg Public Schools, Regions, Cooper Power Systems, Lamar County Schools and BancorpSouth.
United Way thanks all the organizations that took part in the campaign and helped us set a new record! |

Pinebelt Association for Families
This summer about 20 grandchildren being raised by grandparents in the Hattiesburg-Petal area will participate in a summer enrichment program. Grandchildren will provide service activities for elderly and/or disabled senior residents who are part of a Faith in Action program run by the Pinebelt Association for Families. Grandchildren will mow lawns, do light housework and engage in light duties as needed and deemed "doable." Recreation will also be provided based on their work participation. In July, the program will focus on hands-on science, math and language arts to prepare grandkids for back-to-school.

DREAM of Hattiesburg
Through a partnership with USM's Center for Community and Civic Engagement, DREAM has participated in the Reading is Fundamental program. Four events to encourage reading during the summer have provided opportunities for students at Woodley Elementary School, Pine Haven Apartments, Palmers Crossing Community Center and Peace and Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church to select a book that they would like to read. The children choose three books during the year to add to their personal library at home. This program will resume at the beginning of the new school year.
Students enrolled in the DREAM Center Tutoring and Enrichment Program enjoyed a party for reflection and celebration last month. They celebrated their group reading achievements and were given the opportunity to thank USM student tutors who had worked with them this year. Members of the USM First Books advisory board joined us in presenting books to this group of children as a reward for their efforts to study, complete homework assignments and improve reading skills. A First Books grant has made it possible for us to purchase approximately 250 childrens books to distribute to the children in the tutoring program.
Boy Scouts
Scoutreach is getting ready for the summer season! This year we will run eight weeks of day camp at Aldersgate Mission, Edward Street Fellowship Center and at the old Boys and Girls Club. We are looking forward to registering over 1,500 Scouts this summer.
The Boy Scouts would like to congratulate Eagle Scout Joseph Wesley, who was valedictorian at Hattiesburg High this year. Eagle Scouts who recently graduated high school include Trey Newsome, Joseph Wesley, Brian McMillan, Dexter Cooley and Corey Walker. |
