Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters will hold a Big Sister Luncheon at Hawkins Elementary School on Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hattiesburg hopes this event will be a rewarding experience for the young girls to gain posititve self esteem. This event will give 10 little girls the social and emotional support needed to continue to do well in school. Most of the children at Hawkins Elementary stem from predominantly single parent, grandparent-raised and low income households. The children are exposed to negative influences within the home and community, and school is sometimes their only positive outlet. Junior Auxiliary of Hattiesburg has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide these girls with an opportunity to experience the program. Adult role models will be paired with their little sisters for the year and will continue to provide meaningful and supportive relationships and assist the children with achieving their highest potential. Through this program children will become confident, competent and caring individuals.

For more information about the event or to become a volunteer contact, Kim Gowdy at 601-545-1602 or kgowdy@bbsms.org

Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse and The Carpenter's Helper

On Aug. 9, The Carpenter's Helper led in the construction of a much-needed wheelchair ramp at the Center for Prevention of Child Abuse Child Advocacy Center.  This is a great example of two United Way agencies partnering to help each other!  Materials for the ramp were provided by the Oak Grove Exchange Club.  The Carpenter's Helper, along with 20 volunteers from local Exchange Clubs, provided the labor.  The addition of the ramp will extend services to clients with disabilities and also aid in meeting ADA complilance.

Christian Services

Christian Services has been very busy helping with hurricane relief in the past month.  The agency received over 59 pallets of food from around the area.  Sixteen pallets were sent to Meridian through Mustard Tree Missions to feed evacuess from Hurricane Gustav, and 13 pallets were delivered to Killian, LA to feed Gustav victims there.  Another 18 pallets were sent to First Baptist Church of Larose, LA to serve victims of Hurricane Ike from Larose, Grand Isle, Houma, Cut-Off, Galliano and Golden Meadow, LA.  Five pallets have also been sent to New Life Ministries in Montegut, LA to feed victims of Ike in Montegut and Chauvin.  Christian Services is planning more trips to the affected areas to help in any way it can.  As we were helped during Hurricane Katrina, Christian Services is giving back to help others.
