October 2007 Newsletter
Signs of fall are all around:  cooler weather, football and United Way's campaign!
Our campaign volunteers are hard at work, and we want to thank each and every one of you for your support, whether it's through your time or your donations.  Your efforts truly do make a difference in the lives of thousands of people in our community.  And that's what matters.
100% in 100 Days Countdown

As of October 2, there are only 45 days left in the 100% challenge.  Let's get those campaigns turned in on time!  Our local campaign deadline is November 16!
Loaned Executive hard at work

Loaned Executive Chris Martin of Hattiesburg Clinic hit the ground running when he began his term with United Way on September 4.  His days are filled with phone calls, campaign recruitment and speaking engagements.  His help to this year's campaign has been remarkable.  United Way once again gives Hattiesburg Clinic a huge THANK YOU for sharing Chris with us.

"J-Lo" and "David Letterman" highlight Campaign Kick-off

        Jennifer Lopez

If you missed this year's Campaign Kick-off, you missed quite a show.  We were honored to have David Letterman (Bill Hickman) and Jennifer Lopez (Alan Carlson) present to us United Way's Top Ten Campaign Moments as part of "Lunch Time with David Letterman."  Paulette Shaffer and a stupid human trick were also part of the show.

Although the Letterman skit was the most entertaining part of Kick-off, Campaign Chair Skippy Haik of the Hattiesburg American also made the exciting announcement of this year's campaign goal - $1.6 million!  This is our largest goal ever!  We feel confident that we can reach this goal, especially thanks to the great lead given to us by our Pacesetters.  This year's Pacesetters raised $487,044, which is 30% of the overall goal.  We'd like to thank our Pacesetters for a job well done!

Boy Scouts

Boy Scouts

Pictured above are Boy Scouts Nickolas Greene, Glenn Livingston, Jr., Carl Donaldson, Jr. and Scout leader Philip Wright.  These three Scouts from the Coast lost everything during Hurricane Katrina.  However, they were determined to earn their Eagle Scout rank.  Since November 2005, these Scouts have traveled to Hattiesburg once a week to attend Boy Scouts meetings.  They have recently all obtained their honorable goal of reaching Eagle Scout status.  We congratulate these Scouts for their determination and hard work.
Girl Scouts

The Gulf Pines Council of Girl Scouts is currently recruiting volunteers.  Whether you are single or married, have children or not, male or female, old or young, there is a spot for you.  No Scouting experience is necessary.  Opportunities include leading or assisting with a troop, guest speaking and periodic volunteering.
---
The Girl Scouts will host a leadership workshop this weekend for all girls in 6th grade or higher.  Team building skills and business skills will be taught.
---
Girl Scouts recently participated in "Step It Up," in which 500 people, including Girl Scouts from 21 counties, walked on the Longleaf Trace for 2.5 miles to promote healthy living.  Girls were given pedometers and tracker sheets to track their progress over 10 weeks.
