United Way of America

Basic Facts about United Way of America

United Way is a national network of more than 1,300 locally governed organizations that work to create lasting positive changes in communities and people’s lives. Building on more than a century of service as the nation’s preeminent community-based fundraiser, United Way engages the community to identify the underlying causes of the most significant local issues, develops strategies and pulls together financial and human resources to address them, and measures the results. United Way of America is the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement. While local United Ways tackle issues based on local needs, common focus areas include helping children and youth succeed, improving access to health care, promoting self-sufficiency, and strengthening families.

• The United Way system includes approximately 1,300 community-based United Way organizations. Each is independent, separately incorporated, and governed by local volunteers.

• The mission of United Way of America is to mobilize the caring power of communities.

• The vision of United Way of America: We will build a stronger America by mobilizing our communities to improve people's lives.

• Here are the major areas in which United Way of America saw results in 2006: (1) Helping Children Come to School Ready to Learn (Born Learning and Success by Six programs)  (2) Helping People Get and Give Help: 2-1-1  (3) Engaging Civic Engagement and Volunteerism  (4) Crisis Preparedness, Response and Recovery  (5)  Strategic Partnerships  (6) Diversity and Inclusion

United Way of America provides:

National leadership: United Way of America invests in the programs and services that strengthen the ability of local United Ways to identify and build a coalition around a set of community  priorities and measure success based on community impact.

Public policy: United Way of America works with Congress and the Administration to promote policies and programs that activate national resources to address local priorities.

Membership support: United Way of America supports its members with services that include national brand advertising, the NFL partnership, training, public relations, research, and  management of relationships with national corporate and philanthropic partners.

Governance and structure: A volunteer board consisting of 45 members governs United Way of America. The national center does not raise or distribute funds or govern how local United Ways raise or distribute funds. The first national service center was established in 1918.

• United Way of Southeast Mississippi sends only one percent of the local money pledged to United Way of America in exchange for these many support services.
