How to Volunteer

United Way of Southeast Mississippi and its agencies depend heavily on volunteers.  We greatly appreciate our volunteers and their service to the community.

Many volunteer opportunities exist in our area.  If you are interested in volunteering or you'd like to register your non-profit group to receive volunteers, please visit www.VolunteerHattiesburg.org.

Below is a list of volunteer needs at our United Way agencies.  Most agencies require volunteers to complete a volunteer application.  For a sample application, click here.

Agency Volunteer Needs
Aldersgate Mission  
American Red Cross Leaders to provide Together We Prepare presentations to schools and businesses; trained disaster volunteers to assist with local or national disasters of all kinds; HIV/AIDS Instructors; receptionist/data entry assistance; experienced fund raiser; CPR & first aid instructors
Association for Retarded Citizens Volunteers needed for weekend respite programs for children, adult women, and adult men; maintenance jobs; help washing bus routinely; outdoor clean-up crew
*Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentors, both male and female, to provide a caring one on one relationship with a child between the ages of 5-15 (High school students also needed for school-based mentoring); assistance with monthly activities; games and activities for school mentoring programs
*Boy Scouts of America, Pine Burr Area Council Troop leaders to work with youth on a weekly basis; assistance with audio/visual projects; maintenance for facilities
The Carpenter's Helper  
*Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse Volunteers are needed to be counselors for parents and help their families develop values and produce positive growth in their children.
Children's Center for Communication and Development Accounting assistance with QuickBooks
Christian Services, Inc.  
*Domestic Abuse Family Shelter Active volunteers to assist with childcare, shopping, transportation, and organizing donations.  Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.  (Confidentiality is of utmost importance.)

DuBard School for Language Disorders
part time librarian; part time art and music teachers--needed on an intermittent basis
The Family Y  
*Girl Scouts Adult volunteers over the age of 18 are needed to work with girls ages 5-17.  Volunteers can: work in a troop setting as leaders, help support staff in the office, help troops at local schools or after school programs and work at two camps located in south Forrest County or Meridian, MS.
Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity Volunteers need to help build Habitat homes, work in the office, assist with fundraising events or serve on a committee
L.I.F.E. of South Mississippi  
Pinebelt Association for Families  
R³SM Volunteers needed to help with home repairs and home construction
The Salvation Army  
*Shafer Center for Crisis Intervention Volunteers needed to answer 24-hour crisis line and be of support to victims of sexual assault at local hospital emergency rooms.  Training is mandatory and provided twice yearly.  A one year commitment is requested.
*South Mississippi Children's Center One-on-one mentors; tutors to help with homework; leadership of in-house activities for groups of children; supervision and support of children in recreational activities outside residence; clerical/computer assistance; advocacy for shelter and at-risk children; implementing projects for facilities
