HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Dozens of children in the Pine Belt spent their morning at the Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County.
And, by all accounts, they had fun taking part in “Community Literacy Day,” with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math.
“I learned how to build a plane, how to make parachutes, and a bunch of other stuff,” said 9-year-old Makayla Shinall.
The event was hosted by the United Way of Southeast Mississippi.
“We got to make a kind of Play-Doh and it was really fun to do that,” said Xander Evans, an 8 year old who attended the Community Literacy Day.
Several special guests read to the children and there were lots of STEM activities.
“(We learned) how to make airplanes, how to make parachutes, how to make all that stuff,” said 10-year-old Daimar Smith. “This place is cool.”
Each child also took home a free book.
“I got to play with the bubbles outside,” said 7-year-old Hadley Tesh. “I was super excited and I love this event.”
The event was co-hosted by Hattiesburg Parks & Recreation, Hattiesburg Early Learning Collaborative and Hattiesburg Excel by 5.
